The Zionsville Police Department Citizen Academy will once again offer citizens a chance to learn from the professionals who train officers in the department.
The free academy is an opportunity to experience some of the training required to become a police officer. The eight-week academy focuses on educating citizens about the Zionsville Police Department, organization, operations, and role in the community. Classes are held one evening a week and last three hours, said Lt. ZPD Drake Sterling, the department’s public information officer.
Participants will gain an understanding of the responsibilities of the police service, and the laws and procedures of the service that govern its operation. The aim of the academy is to continue to develop the partnership between citizens and local law enforcement agencies.
“They will be getting instructions and demonstrations from our crime scene investigators, our members of our drug task force,” Sterling said. “They will learn why the officers stop traffic the way they do. They may even have the option of driving cars on an emergency vehicle route. They will also be demonstrating with some of the guns we carry. It really is a comprehensive overview of how we operate internally. I think it helps to open people’s eyes to what’s going on in this job.
Each block is taught either by an instructor or by a senior member in the specialty discussed during the course.
“You get the same instructors that we do as police officers,” Sterling said.
By offering citizens a chance to participate in the academy, department officials believe it will strengthen relationships with the community and allow residents to help the department, Sterling said.
“The public will often help us solve crime and get attention where it’s needed most,” Sterling said. you have
The academy is only open to people 18 years of age and older who live or work in Zionsville. Applications are accepted on a first come, first served basis until October 18. There are still a limited number of places.
