LUBBOCK, Texas – KLBK meteorologist Jack Maney has your Wednesday morning weather update!

Today: Warm and partly cloudy, thunderstorms coming in from the west late. Chance of rain: 10%. Top of 104°. Winds SSW 10-15 MPH.
This evening:
A warm night, a few persistent thunderstorms after midnight. Chance of rain: 20%. Minimum of 78°. S winds 5-10 MPH.
Tomorrow:
Scattered thunderstorms re-develop throughout the day. Chance of Rain: 30% Maximum 99°. SE winds 12-18 MPH.

Get ready for another hot day outside, but we’re going to be on a downtrend for the next few days, and we might even have a chance of rain in this forecast after all!

The upper high anticyclone that gave us yesterday’s scorching heat will loosen its grip on the southern plains in the next few days, retreating a little to the west. This will give us a cooling trend that starts today, but we won’t stop getting hot this afternoon. Highs will hit triple digits again today, although no reading above 110 is expected. We should reach 104 in Lubbock, with temperatures slightly cooler in the west and slightly warmer in the east. Cloud cover will increase today from yesterday as a wave of mid-level humidity moves in from the north, and this will persist for the next couple of days, and may even help create a chance of showers and thunderstorms!

A wave of storms is expected to build off the mountains of New Mexico this evening and roll south and east in our general direction. Northwesterly winds aloft coupled with moisture in place are a classic recipe for overnight rain chances at this time of year, and that should set in tonight. The storms will arrive in the west after sunset and mostly break up as they cross Texas, but they will leave flow boundaries behind that will play a role in Thursday’s increased storms!

The chance of rain will likely be better on Thursday as the development of scattered thunderstorms looks possible throughout the day. It will also help cool things down a bit more, although the heat is still with us as the highs hit the upper 90s and lower 100s. The chance of rain usually appears at around 30% tomorrow, and another thunderstorm complex coming in from the west late in the day will once again increase the chances for people to the west.

The chance of rain will decrease as the upper high moves overhead on Friday and into the weekend, but this time we will see a much weaker and less organized flow pattern, and that should give us keep from seeing extreme heat this time around. Temperatures are forecast to remain in the high 90s to low 100s early next week, with the extended forecast looking mostly dry.

Stay cool and have a wonderful Wednesday!

Jack Maney
