Geneva Believer ends more than 5 years of publishing city news

The Geneva Believer puts an end to a more than five-year edition of the city.

Founder Jim Meaney posted a heartfelt message to the publication’s loyal readers, saying a host of factors went into the decision.

“I immersed myself in the work of researching and reporting on social and political happenings in my small hometown of Geneva, NY. Geneva Believer has grown from a local alternative news blog to an influential source of information about ‘investigation and opinions on social and political happenings in our community,’ Meaney said in the post dated January 27, 2022. ‘Today I am announcing that I’ve made the difficult decision to cease the publication of Geneva Believer, with immediate effect.

For Meaney, the decision came in part out of necessity and desire. The excitement he once felt when reporting on the city he called home has faded. “I have always sought to give Geneva the unvarnished truth, however uncomfortable it may be, and now I have to be equally honest with myself. The truth is that I no longer feel the same excitement, satisfaction and joy in writing for Geneva Believer. The truth is that the inherent stress of writing about city politics has had a negative impact on my health. The truth is that I owe it to my family to be healthy and present. And although it saddens me to end it, I cannot allow Geneva Believer to stand between me and my family, and my own well-being,” he wrote.

He thanked the supporters, city employees, sources and community who made the independent publication possible.

“Big thanks also go to all the anonymous and uncredited contributors who worked in the ‘Geneva Believer Newsroom’. These mysterious staff members provided advice, inside information, leaked documents, etc., sometimes at great personal and professional risk, in order to bring the truth to Geneva. Even though mine was the only name on the blog, I never felt like I was doing it alone, and I can’t thank you enough. The community is extremely lucky to have such truth tellers among us,” he added. “Finally, I want to thank my family and friends for their love and support. Without all of you, there is no Geneva Believer.
