When the Madison County High School (MCHS) Cowboys take to the field on Friday night, August 19 to face the Wakulla High School War Eagles, it will be a combination of new and old. Under new head coach Price Harris, there will be some new wrinkles that many Cowboy fans will appreciate. At the same time, he’ll likely have a nostalgic feel for Coach Harris. Coach Harris, an MCHS graduate, will make his head coaching debut for the Cowboys, although he has returned to Boot Hill on several occasions since his days as a cowboy chap. Coach Harris was an assistant coach at MCHS, before becoming the head coach at Dunnellon High School. While coaching at Dunnellon, his team frequently traveled to Madison to play the Cowboys. The latest was last season when Dunnellon handed the Cowboys their third loss of the season. This game proved to be a turning point for the Cowboys, as they went through the rest of the season undefeated, winning another state championship.

“I’m sure it will be a surreal feeling as a head coach here,” Coach Harris said. “There will be a lot of emotions. Even though it’s not a regular season game, we’re very excited to play.”

The game will not be a “normal” regular season game. This will be the “Kickoff Classic” for both teams, so it can be expected that each team will likely play a more conservative game than they would if it was a regular season contest. That being said, don’t be surprised to see the Cowboys open up a bit and spread the ball on offense from time to time. Coach Harris has already made it known that he plans to open up his offensive unit and take more shots from the field than many Cowboy fans are used to seeing. The game will play as a full game. The competition will feature college newbies starting the game and then it will be plenty of reserve players who will have the opportunity to show off what they have got. The contest will conclude with the junior college players entering the field. Many players will have the opportunity to play the action, which is sure to delight fans and family members. It will also be a valuable tool for the coaching staff.

The “Price Harris Era” begins Friday, August 19 at Boot Hill Stadium, located on the MCHS campus. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
